D. Garry Munson is the President, Principal, and Co-Founder of Whitney Capital Company, L.L.C., where he has led the firm’s real estate investment, development, and asset management activities since its founding in 1992. Over three decades, Mr. Munson has built Whitney Capital into a vertically integrated real estate platform with a long-standing focus on multifamily housing, including affordable and convetional housing, supported by disciplined underwriting and hands-on management.

In 1978, Mr. Munson founded Whitney Management Corp., an affiliated apartment management company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Today, Whitney Management oversees operations across the Whitney portfolio and reflects Mr. Munson’s long-held belief that direct operational control is essential to long-term optimal value creation in real estate.

Prior to founding Whitney Capital and Whitney Management, Mr. Munson held senior leadership roles across some of the most respected institutions in housing finance and real estate development.. From 1985 to 1992, he was Executive Vice President and Director of Acquisitions at New York-based Related Capital Company L.L.C., where he was also a shareholder and played a key role in scaling the firm’s national affordable multifamily platform.

Mr. Munson’s career began at the intersection of public policy, housing finance, and community development. He previously served as Director of Community Development and Housing Finance for the Savings Bank Association of the State of New York, held roles with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Philadelphia, served as Director of Development for the Philadelphia Housing Authority, and was Executive Director of the Niagara Frontier Housing Development Corporation in Buffalo, New York. This foundation of experiences has contributed to his disciplined, downside-protected approach to affordable and conventional multifamily investment.

Mr. Munson currently holds ownership interests in 32 multifamily properties totaling 3,108 units, with an aggregate market value exceeding $400 million, in addition to commercial properties valued at over $12 million.

Mr. Munson earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania. A standout athlete at Cornell, he ranks among the university’s all-time leaders in rebounding and was named to the inaugural class of Ivy League Basketball Legends, honoring individuals who have made enduring contributions to their programs and institutions.

He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the National Housing & Rehabilitation Association and is a member of the National Council of Coaches vs. Cancer, a joint initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
